Lighting event reveals new angles into architecture
Guerrilla Lighting is an event series that started in the UK and presents and owns the city and its architecture in different light through quick flashes. The purpose of the Guerrilla Lighting event is to draw attention to the lighting of the environment – what is being lit and why and whether residents can impact the lighting of their environment.
Guerrilla Lighting Jätkäsaari is organized 14 September as part of an architectural lighting course at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki and the Helsinki Design Week programme. The projects presented in the event include places around Jätkäsaari and Ruoholahti that inspire the students.
“Lighting is of utmost importance in a country like Finland where half of the year is really dark. If this was recognized, we could do so much more with lighting,” says Teo Lanerva from the lighting design programme of the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts.
New kind of lighting projects are carried out mainly around the channel of Ruoholahti and the Crusell bridge. The purpose of this event is to draw attention to lighting and its capacity to create an inspiring social environment in the city.
“Anyone can participate in the programme as a light bearer or enjoy the experience in the audience,” says Reija Pasanen, supervising teacher of the architectural lighting course from Ramboll Finland Oy.
The second part of the event is a panel discussion taking place on Friday 15 September at Messukeskus as part of the Showroom event. Among other things, the panel will discuss how to bring lighting closer to the citizens and serve the residents better.
“It is important for the city, too, to have recognizable places with their own identities, and these are easy to add by lighting,” Pasanen explains.
