Traditions benefit from new ideas and evolve into new traditions, according to Tapio Viitasaari
A new contemporary art biennale opens this week at Gallery Loisti in Helsinki. The TAIDEHAISTELIJA (“ART SNIFFER”) BIENNALE 2025 features works by 24 artists, all of which are available for purchase. The event is curated and organised by art enthusiast, collector, and professional musician Tapio Viitasaari. Helsinki Design Weekly met with Viitasaari during the opening week.

Launched in 2022 by Viitasaari, the Taidehaistelija (“Art Sniffer”) project connects artists with those considering acquiring art. Taidehaistelija sources works that match specific criteria for clients and maintains a vibrant Instagram account, where Viitasaari interviews artists, showcases their work, shares tips on discovering design and art treasures, and provides insights into his personal collection. Now, audiences can experience Taidehaistelija in the form of an exhibition with the launch of the biennale.
Weekly: Could you tell us a bit more about the motto, “Buy one artwork per year”?
Taidehaistelija: The idea is to draw attention to contemporary artists, their work, and the importance of acquiring art. The motto is pedagogical; it encourages people to reflect on their relationship with art by asking, “What kind of artwork would I like?” Viewing art is also a skill that can be developed. For me, following the motto is a way to support artists and engage with the art community. Of course, purchasing art also depends on resources – one may not always have the budget or space – but with the right guidance, great alternatives can be found.

Weekly: What is currently inspiring Taidehaistelija?
Taidehaistelija: Organising this biennale. I’m thrilled to create an event that brings artists and their works together. The biennale also reflects my own taste and curiosity. More broadly, I’m inspired by events, concerts, and people gathering together.
“The biennale also reflects my own taste and curiosity.”
Weekly: Do you see any similarities between Taidehaistelija and making music? Can you apply any of your skills as a musician to this artistic treasure hunt?
Taidehaistelija: That’s an interesting question! Being quick to react and presenting ideas effectively are key skills in the Taidehaistelija project. These are things I’ve learned from making music and playing in bands.

Weekly: What is still missing from your personal collection?
Taidehaistelija: Every piece in the Biennale.
Weekly: You seek to blend traditional and new practices in presenting visual art. Why is it important to challenge old ways of doing things?
Taidehaistelija: Traditions benefit from new ideas and evolve into new traditions. The synthesis of old and new is exciting. There should be more fluid movement between institutions and independent creators. In the case of Taidehaistelija, the communication style is a mix of academically precise and naively carefree.

Weekly: What if someone finds the art world distant or even intimidating?
Taidehaistelija: Start with subjects that feel personal and explore what seems approachable. Saying your thoughts out loud – perhaps to Taidehaistelija – can also help.
Weekly: What’s next for Taidehaistelija? What are your dreams for the project?
Taidehaistelija: I’d love to start a podcast and explore the summer’s countryside flea markets.
