The theme of Helsinki Design Week 2026 is The Oncoming Other

Helsinki Design Week, the largest design and architecture festival in the Nordics, will take place 28 August – 6 September 2026. This year the festival spreads out across the streets, turning its attention to the oncoming: the encounters we have with others.

The creative field is a sensitive ecosystem that unfolds not through rigid structures but through encounters. Even the smallest shifts can lead to something larger. Cities are built in much the same way: through networks of people, ideas and places that strengthen one another. In our cities, life is in constant motion, open to chance, interaction and change.

The theme of Helsinki Design Week 2026 is The Oncoming Other. In urban life we are constantly moving toward one another. What happens in these seemingly random encounters? What could happen in them? And what kind of presence do we bring when we meet others?

“The creative sector does not emerge within closed systems but through connections between people, and in networks where ideas, resources and meaning circulate. When creators, audiences, funders, media and the city meet regularly, resilience begins to form: the possibility to renew, adapt and imagine the future together,” says Kari Korkman, founder of Helsinki Design Week.

The idea of coming toward one another contains both chance encounters and intentional openness. It suggests permeability, curiosity and a willingness to change. It asks us to let go of assumptions and make space for new thinking to flow through what once seemed self-evident.

Korkman continues,“The cultural field operates in a multi-layered balance between artistic, economic and societal goals. Truly new ideas often emerge in informal contexts; at the margins, across organisational boundaries. These connections cannot be forced, but their emergence can be supported by creating open platforms where encounters can happen again and again, building trust and genuine interaction.”

Helsinki Design Week will once again create such a platform across the city. Visitors are invited to explore how design can help shape a world that is more open to encounters.

Who is coming toward us?
What happens in these meetings?
Where are we not yet present, and whom do we not yet encounter?
What kind of encounterers are we?

Strong brands have their own carefully considered outlines. Where does a brand meet people? What changes through these encounters? Where and how do we step into the city?

The open call for Helsinki Design Week 2026 is now open until 1 June 2026. The early bird discount for events and the Design Market ends on April 2nd.

Open call for events

Would you like to organize an event as part of Helsinki Design Week — a discussion, workshop, walking tour, exhibition or fashion show?

Submit your proposal by 1 June.

Applicants are encouraged to reflect on the festival theme of encounter: how does your proposal engage with the city and with the people moving through it?

Selected events will become part of the official Helsinki Design Week programme and will be included in the festival’s international marketing and communications.

Open Studios

The creative sector thrives on openness and porous boundaries. Open Studios invites visitors inside designers’ workspaces, offering a glimpse into the everyday life of creative practice.

On two Fridays during the festival, the public will have the opportunity to visit some of Helsinki’s most interesting studios and hear directly from designers about the ideas and phenomena currently shaping their work.

Design Market

Design Market, the largest design stock sale event in the Nordic countries, traditionally opens Helsinki Design Week. This year, the Design Market will evolve into a Design Supermarket, with an offering that stretches well beyond the usual.

The curated event is highly sought after among designers and brands. Applications are now open for both the Design Market and Collectors’ Market, which focuses on recycled, vintage and unique pieces.
