Open House Helsinki pop-up event: Ruoholahti joint shelter– Viinatunneli
Open House Helsinki collaboration with Design Weekly (Luovi Productions), which began in the spring of 2024 at the Open House Helsinki event, will continue this fall. This time we will open the door to the Ruoholahti joint shelter, colloquially also called Viinatunneli. A location literally tying to this year’s under the Surface theme.
The liquor tunnel transported bottles from the Alko factory to the central warehouse above the tunnel. The construction started in 1973 and it was opened in 1978. It was a big project in Helsinki at that time. During the construction phase, the workers used to have bike races in the tunnel before their shift. The use of the tunnel ended in 1993 when Alko’s production moved away from Salmisaari. Since then, the tunnel has served as a civilian shelter.
The location has previously been a part of the OHH program, but since then it has been banned from use until now.
Max. 15 people per round. Pre-registration is mandatory for the tour.
