Designing Darkness
DESIGNING DARKNESS
Designing Darkness is a discussion event exploring the theme of darkness as a tool in design and art. The event explores how darkness can be used in architecture, design, and art as a medium of expression and experience, and how it can be consciously incorporated into the design process.
In addition to its physical properties, darkness carries symbolic, cultural, aesthetic, and emotional dimensions.
In this event, two experts from the fields of architecture and art will explore the theme from their own perspectives. The program also includes a screening of the experimental short film Strangers in the Dark, which follows a glowworm’s quest to find a mate in a world where the nights are no longer dark.
Designing Darkness highlights the interdisciplinary nature of design and deepens our understanding of the dialogue between light and darkness.
SPEAKERS
Henrika Pihlajaniemi, architect and researcher, presents The Art of Darkness project, which aims to increase understanding of the cultural, aesthetic, and sustainability values of darkness as part of European cultural heritage. The project explores how darkness can enrich the experiential quality of places and support sustainable design.
Jaakko Niemelä, visual artist, discusses his work with light and darkness. In Niemelä’s art, light is not just a visual element, but a structural component akin to material. He is particularly interested in shadows, darkness, and the interaction between natural and artificial light. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Niemelä has transitioned from printmaking to spatial installations, video, and public art.
