The Helsinki Design Week festival features more than 250 events that widely relate to the various aspects of design. Organised for the twelfth time, HDW is to spread all over the Helsinki area. There is only one month to go until the festival begins! See the full programme here.
During previous years, HDW has occupied empty buildings with its exhibitions and events. This year, however, we go where people are: to the streets and parks and to the stores and galleries.
The main event, a never before seen series of city installations take over the city centre. HDW HOP presents 12 works from individual designers, collectives and students. They include Finnish and international makers who have been given the freedom to brainstorm ways to regenerate the city with design.
Unforeseen events
A new event Sauna Talks is a series of discussions that address Finnish sauna culture and throw some steam at five socially intriguing topics.
The City of Helsinki, Iso Numero magazine, and Helsinki Design Week invite citizens to come and bathe and discuss our city, its us-er-driven services, and their design amidst varying life situations. The Sauna Talks event involves five public saunas in Helsinki, each with their own theme, and a “sauna major” to chair the talk. The event is open to all sauna-goers with free entry to the discussions and sauna.
New Market, a new market place, offers early adopters an opportunity to check out completely new kind of design products.
Playful launch and sales event established by Helsinki Design Week and Finlayson opens next to extremely popular Design Market. People can move from one event to the next by grabbing the colourful rope bus pulled by a bus driver. Products selected for the New Market are curated by designer Sebastian Jansson.

As Helsinki Design Week’s theme this year is Better, we decided to give the floor to people who constantly do better in their work.
We organized a photo session for a day for previously unacquainted professionals of different fields to meet up and discuss what doing better means to them.
See our atmospheric making-of video that share the thoughts of e.g. sculptor Kim Simonson, designer Sami Ruotsalainen, and Maija Arela, the founder of Arela.
You will become familiar with these 12 faces in early autumn at Helsinki Design Week events and channels. Videos and photos have been created by production company Koski Syväri. The campaign’s visual appearance has been designed by Kokoro & Moi.
