New Market is a novelty event to launch and sell new products by tens of talented makers and brands. Here is a taste of things to come.

Helsinki Design Week’s novelty event New Market is to launch and sell products by more than 50 Finnish and international designers and brands, including Paper Collective, Costo, Smaller Objects, Wästberg, Haagnees, Willem Heeffer, Nordic Hysteria and Eleanor Bolton, and many more.

One of them is awarded designer Elina Ulvio. Just this year, the Wallpaper magazine chose to include her in their Next Big Things issue that presents the great new talents in the world.

Hello Elina! Why did you decide to join the New Market?

New forums for fresh Finnish design are inspiring and most welcome. Latest Finnish design needs outcomes and actions to enable the outcomes. In addition to good products, international credibility has largely to do with marketing. I hope Finnish design finds its routes and values without being burdened by elitism.

What are you working on right now?

I’m preparing for several projects related to Helsinki Design Week as I am participating in New Market and the events held in the Old Customs Warehouse in Katajanokka and in Habitare.

My exhibition called Lights, Design and Dimensions in Katajanokka reflects my favourite theme: mixing an object, space and light. Sound dimension is a new addition that creates something close to spatial art. My obelisk-telescope clock is a reminder of the earthly calendar.

At Habitare, I participate in the EcoDesign exhibition, and in the Block area I share a UV stand with Laura Väre. In addition, I’m launching my KUU table and mirror set together with Nordic Hysteria.

Are you able to tell what we can see from you at the New Market?

My coffee table called Divide was created based on the need to have a beautiful and practical, both industrially and logically sensible living room table.

Shelf called Frame combines space-saving with mood lighting.

Woodi and HulaHula log holders have been designed for the decorators who are not willing to compromise their home ambiance.

Point chair, that I designed for OK Design in 2015-2016 is a three legged dining chair which elegantly combines minimalistic silhouettes with geometrical shapes. It is durable for outdoor use.

What do you expect from Helsinki Design Week 2016?

Joy and success. And feedback. It is great to face people and their genuine opinions after a long period of working in the basement.
