Intentional objects – composition – drawing workshops
The arrangements and the created design objects tell us something about the character of their time and their makers.
The drawing workshop brings Finnish design objects for reinterpretation—and simply for spending a moment together examining the compositions.
This low-threshold workshop is led by Milla-Maija Saari, a student at the Academy of Fine Arts. During the workshop, she will give participants different drawing exercises based on two different arrangements, including quick sketches, or croquis, as well as a couple of longer drawing sessions.
Duration: 1,5 hrs
Ticket price: €35
Number of participants: 12
Darning Workshop
The Darning Workshop is led by Textile Designer Saimi Parikka, who will teach you the art of cross-stitch darning and tips on other darning techniques.
You can bring your own garment or piece of textile that needs mending, or use the materials provided at the workshop. We will begin by practising on a fabric swatch that matches the item you want to repair as much as possible.
All necessary tools and darning yarns are provided at the workshop. The workshop is mainly in Finnish but guidance is available in English if needed.
Duration: 2 tuntia
Ticket price: €35
Number of participants: 17
Visible Mending & Sashiko – Workshop for denim
Welcome to discover sashiko, a traditional Japanese hand-stitching technique that has been used for centuries to repair, reinforce, and extend the life of garments. Today, sashiko is also celebrated as a beautiful and creative form of visible mending, offering a way to care for clothing while giving it a renewed character.
In this two-hour beginner-friendly workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of sashiko and have the opportunity to practise the technique in a relaxed and welcoming environment. You are encouraged to bring your own jeans or other denim garment with signs of wear, a hole, or an area you would like to reinforce or embellish. Denim patches will also be available, allowing you to practise before working on your own garment.
Sashiko needles, thread, and all other necessary materials will be provided during the workshop. No previous sewing experience is required.
Workshop objectives
- Learn about the history and principles of sashiko
- Practise the basic sashiko stitching techniques

About Seams Helsinki
Seams Helsinki is an open collective that promotes a more inclusive and sustainable fashion culture through alternative and critical fashion practices. The collective brings together designers and sustainability professionals who believe that the future of fashion should be more local, decentralised, and resource-wise—and that this transition begins with people, both those who make fashion and those who wear it.
Seams Helsinki shares critical fashion and design practices through open-source thinking and participatory design. The collective organises workshops, discussions, and reading circles that are open to everyone. Sharing practical skills and learning together are at the heart of everything we do.
