I’M YOUR MOTHER – Motherhood as a Service. Lesson in life! Reshape your relationship with your mother through service design methods.
Mothers shape lives. But now it’s time for the mother-adult child relationship to be the object of design.

Do you have a mother? Or perhaps you are already a mother to adult children yourself? Join us during Helsinki Design Week for a workshop that is part of Jonna Mannila’s Master’s thesis project in design. In this workshop, we will do a brief, light-hearted exercise and look at the relationship between an adult child and their mother through the lens of service design.

Please note: The age limit for the workshop is 18. Registration instructions will be posted here approximately 2 weeks before the event. Please note that the workshop will be conducted in Finnish only.

The workshop is part of the Master’s thesis project "I’M YOUR MOTHER – Motherhood as a Service" by Jonna Mannila (Master of Arts), a Service Design student at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. In her thesis, Jonna Mannila explores motherhood as a service within the framework of life design. The theme for Helsinki Design Week 2026 is The Oncoming Other / Vastaantulija.

Can the "service" provided by a mother be improved through design? How would the relationship between an adult child and a mother change if this previously organically formed service were redesigned together with the user? And how should one view the service if it terminates without you canceling the contract? Where can you file a complaint? In her thesis, service design student Jonna Mannila explores motherhood as a service within the framework of life design.

BORROW A MOTHER FROM RIKHARDINKATU LIBRARY
TUE 1.9. BORROW A MOTHER FROM THE LIBRARY from 10:00 to 18:00
WED 2.9. BORROW A MOTHER FROM THE LIBRARY from 10:00 to 18:00
Venue: Richardinkatu Library.
Is your mother far away or perhaps no longer reachable? During Helsinki Design Week, you can borrow a native Finnish-speaking mother from the library for 30 or 45 minutes at a time. With the mother, you can chat about this and that or enjoy a cup of coffee together. You can also just sit quietly side by side, share a hug, or hold hands. Please note that the mother cannot be taken outside the library building.

Please note: The age limit for borrowing a mother is 18. The link for booking a mother will be posted here approximately 2 weeks before the event. Please note that the borrowed mothers speak Finnish.
