This popular family event is celebrating its 5th anniversary. It presents an experiential mini world where kids can experience design and architecture through various workshops. Space design for the birthday party is provided by designer Tero Kuitunen.
Visitors can try out the work of a designer from an architect’s, interior designer’s and even an astronaut’s perspective! This year’s new offerings include a larger Little Market and interesting talks with themes such as fashion for kids, children’s Helsinki and vegetarian food.

Stockmann ja Helsinki Design Week kutsuvat kaupunkilaiset uuteen Designer’s Day -tapahtumaan. Tule kuuntelemaan paneelikeskusteluja, joissa visioidaan tulevaisuuden tavarataloja elämysten ja palvelumuotoilun kautta sekä pohditaan tulevaisuuden klassikkotuotteiden menestysreseptiä muotoilijoiden ja trendianalyytikon johdolla. Ohjelmassa on myös kuvittaja Leena Kisosen vetämä naamio-työpaja sekä opastettuja kierroksia, joissa bongaillaan tavaratalon kulttuurihistoriallisesti merkittäviä muotoilu- ja taideaarteita. Food Waste and Circular Economy Festival
The Food Waste and Circular Economy Festival at Teurastamo will produce unexpected experiences from waste food and leftover materials for citizens. A three-course dinner will be served in Kellohalli for 300 visitors. Restonomy students from Laurea University of Applied Sciences will be responsible for creating gastronomic adventures from leftover food from grocery stores. Food bloggers are hosting workshops at the Flavour studio.
In the Teurastamo courtyard, artists and designers will establish a mini factory chain, where leftover materials will get a new life – in demonstrations and workshops. An outdoor stage provides music, interviews and interesting discussions throughout the day.

Re-Imagine Arabia – Plate Decoration Workshop
In this workshop, you can repaint an old Arabia plate with help from Laura Pehkonen, an accomplished Finnish visual artist who works mainly with unique ceramics. “As an artist, I’ve always been interested in multiple layers, dimensions and stories. Variations in pattern and colour, as well as imperfections like cracks and scratches, inspire me. When was this plate made? What did it look like back then? Who owned it, held it, washed it – what was their home like? What were they thinking? This little plate has seen so much in its long history.” The re-decorated plates will be fired in the Centre’s own ceramic kiln in Arabia. The finished plate can be collected from the Design Lab on the 9th floor of the Centre.

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. It was started in the USA by art teachers Lisa Blackburn and John Hartom. Empty Bowls is a happy lunch event that is established through donations given by potters and other craftspeople who make beautiful handcrafted bowls, supported by restaurants that donate delicious soups and bread.
Musical entertainment is also donated to the event by exceptional artists. In exchange for a cash donation (minimum €20), visitors are given a handmade bowl to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In addition, the visitors are invited to enjoy a soup lunch and entertainment in the beautiful Crypt of the Helsinki Dome. The donations to Empty Bowls Helsinki go to the Finnish UNICEF emergency fund to be used where most needed.

‘Here We Are’ is a curated exhibition of work from nine artists and designers (Anastasia Serëgina, Bernardo Rivera, Briana Romero, Chris Fraser, Clif Nay, Ismo Suhonen, Kirsi Syrlin, MariC, Tuuli Levit), who are part of HIAA (Helsinki International Artists’ Association Ry). This group exhibition is a fusion of Finnish and international art and design that shares a common and open-minded vision coming from different angles. The fine line between art and design is explored in this exhibition through the intermingling of artists’ and designers’ works.

Enter is an installation built under Kaartin maneesi, an old riding manege building, that consists of a series of consecutive gates and symbolizes transition from one space, country or culture to another. With the gates, the designers want to study new residents’ impact on the built environment, and the illustrations are made by workshops organized in, for example, reception centres.
The installation has been designed by Inari Virkkala and Sofia de Vocht of architects Virkkala de Vocht together with architect Petri Herrala and graphic designer Marja Tikka. Virkkala de Vocht is an office of young architects founded in 2016 in Helsinki and part of the New City collective formed by ten young architects’ offices. The installation is part of the HDW HOP City Installations.
