Karelian pies and playing cards – the Design Diplomacy in Madrid

In addition to Helsinki, Design Diplomacy discussions have been organized in Reykjavik and Tokyo. Now the event has been held for the first time in Madrid, in the beautiful residence of the Ambassador of Finland.

Design Diplomacy is an event concept launched by Helsinki Design Week in 2016. In addition to Helsinki, Design Diplomacy discussions have been organized in Reykjavik and Tokyo. Now the event has been held for the first time in Madrid, in the beautiful residence of the Ambassador of Finland.

The intimate Design Diplomacy events let the public get familiar with the residences of the ambassadors and listen to a conversation where a local design professional meets a Finnish designer in a card game. Not only the performers but also the public takes the floor during the event.

In Madrid, the guest performers were Finnish Clothing Designer Tytti Thusberg and Spanish Graphic Designer Manuel Estrada. The conversation topics included the shift in the work role of a designer, the possible mistakes Thusberg and Estrada had made, and the risks they had taken during their career. The event was opened by the Ambassador Tiina Jortikka-Laitinen, and present was also the CEO of Helsinki Design Week Kari Korkman, who is behind the Design Diplomacy concept.

The next Design Diplomacy events will be organized in Berlin and Oslo during the first half of the year 2018.
