Finland 100: a critical map

An exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts takes a critical view on the 100-year-old nation. It consists of the works of 12 art students, asking what is really going on in Finland behind the curtain of independence and the centennial celebrations.

MUJI pop up

Desired Japanese design meets the beautiful neo-classical architecture by Lars Sonck, when MUJI opens a pop up store in the Tori Quarters. The store, along with pop up shops by Kuusi Collective, Books & stuff and Moccamaster, is open only during Christmas season.

Immaterial – studies about glass and light

This exhibition at the Iittala & Arabia Design Centre presents lighting experiments with LED lights reflected on various glass surfaces. It explores how to use glass to create different moods.

Lounge Chair Atelier at the Artek Helsinki store

Eames Lounge Chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956 is a classic. Saturday 2 December provides an opportunity to witness the making of the piece as Vitra brings its Lounge Chair Atelier to the Artek Helsinki store. We Jazz

‘Tis the season to be much more than jolly. The largest annual jazz event in Helsinki promises to present “the best jazz of our time”. This year it will feature Verneri Pohjola Group, Elifantree and Timo Lassy & Teppo Mäkynen, among others.

Literary Classics with WSOY

To celebrate Finland 100, WSOY is publishing jubilee editions of classic Finnish literature with new covers designed by contemporary artists. The Helsinki Contemporary exhibition puts the original covers on display. The works are auctioned 17 December, and the funds are donated to charity. Artists include Karoliina Hellberg, Kuutti Lavonen, Rauha Mäkilä and Anna Tuori.

Kallio Calling:
The Christmas of Udumbara

Kallio Calling is a week-long Christmas event presenting small companies in the Kallio district of Helsinki. During the event, ceramic studio Udumbara is open in the evenings from 16.00 to 20.00. Finnish ceramics are on sale at the studio, and you’ll have the chance to make your own flower pot on the wheel.

Christmas at the Ehrensvärd Museum

Located in Suomenlinna, the Ehrensvärd Museum presents the history of the Swedish era in the fortress. The first occupant of the Commander’s House was fortress founder Augustin Ehrensvärd. During the day, you can take a tour of the site with Fortress Gnome Carl, admire 18th century interiors and hear stories about noble homes in the time of the Enlightment.
