The open call for Helsinki Design Week festival events has begun!

A significant part of the festival design and architectural programme is organized together with the local creative community. The “Once a upon a time…” annual theme encourages Helsinki-based creators to identify the power of design more broadly. What is the common story of our city?

“Design is said to solve problems. Successful design does much more. Like storytellers, designers can tickle our imagination, make us curious, bring up emotions and enliven our environments. Although the problems to solve are becoming more complex, we call for beauty, drama, originality and awe, even provocation, to complement form and functionality,” writes Anni Korkman here.

Events are a great tool for trying new things. Opening your studio doors for an afternoon may be a way of presenting new ideas for new acquaintances, a street fashion show may demonstrate new ways of making use of sidewalks, and workshop participants may find answers to questions that they have been thinking about for a long time. For the Helsinki Design Week team, design is a broad concept, and HDW has celebrated creativity at thousands of different events over the years.

Organize an architectural walking tour or launch party, invite us to the opening of your exhibition – share your story with us in September. The application for the Companion and Satellite events is on until 31 May 2023.

The events to be selected will become part of the official programme of Helsinki Design Week and gain visibility in HDW marketing communications. The full festival programme will be launched on 14 June and HDW will take place 8–17 September 2023. More information and the application form can be found here.
